What Are Neutering and Spaying?

Neutering means surgically removing the testicles in male animals, while spaying means removing the ovaries and typically the uterus in female animals. Our experienced veterinary surgeons perform both procedures with your pet under general anaesthesia. The main aim is to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but the procedures also provide important health, behavioural, and social benefits.

At Vienna Vet, we use laparoscopic techniques and specialized instruments to achieve smaller incisions and make the procedure less invasive. Our team specializes in both cat and dog spaying and neutering in Dubai

Benefits of Neutering or Spaying Your Pet

Health Benefits

Females: Spaying significantly lowers the risk of mammary (breast) cancer, particularly if done before the first heat cycle, and removes the potentially fatal risk of uterine infections (pyometra). Additionally, it guards against uterine and ovarian cancers, which are less common but can still be quite dangerous.

Males: Neutering drastically lowers the risk of prostate problems, such as enlargement and infections, and completely prevents testicular cancer. Additionally, it reduces the risk of perianal tumours and certain types of hernia.

Population Control and Social Responsibility

Every year, there are millions of unwanted puppies and kittens born, many of whom end up in shelters or on the streets with uncertain futures. By neutering or spaying your pet, you are directly contributing to the reduction of homeless animals and the workload of animal welfare organizations. It’s a kind choice that helps everyone in the community.

Longer, Healthier Life

Numerous studies have demonstrated that spayed or neutered pets tend to live longer and healthier lives. The risk of some cancers and infections is significantly reduced, and the reduced urge to roam results in fewer accidents and injuries.

Life After Neutering & Spaying: What to Expect

Neutering or spaying your pet is a beneficial procedure for their long-term health and overall well-being. At Vienna Vet, we want you to feel confident about what comes next. Here’s what will happen after your pet’s procedure.

  • Immediate Recovery: Most pets go home on the same day they have surgery. As the anaesthesia wears off, it’s normal for them to be sleepy or less active for the first 24 to 48 hours. We’ll give your pet pain relief to make them more comfortable, and we’ll give you clear instructions on how to care for the incision site. An Elizabethan collar (cone) may be a good idea to keep your pet from licking or chewing on the wound.

  • Getting Back to Normal: For about a week, keep your pet from doing too much so they can heal properly. Please refrain from running, jumping, or playing rough until your veterinarian says it’s okay. After a day or two, your pet’s appetite should be back to normal. Give them small, frequent meals and lots of fresh water.

  • Behaviour and Health: After surgery, a lot of pets calm down and stop roaming, marking, and acting in ways that are caused by hormones. Their basic personality and loving nature remain unchanged. Some pets may have a metabolism that works a little slower. Our team can help you determine what to feed and how to exercise your pet to maintain a healthy weight.

  • Continue with routine veterinary examinations to keep tabs on your pet’s health and address any issues. If you notice anything unusual during your recovery, such as swelling, redness, or a loss of appetite, please notify us immediately.

We have the facility to conduct laboratory tests and health profiles to monitor your pet if necessary. We also provide annual health checkups for ongoing care.

At Vienna Vet, we are here for you and your pet every step of the way, ensuring a smooth recovery and a happy, healthy future for your pet.

When Is the Best Time to Neuter or Spay?

The ideal timing depends on your pet’s species, breed, size, and overall health:

Dogs:

  • Small and medium breeds: Usually between 6 and 9 months of age.

  • Large and giant breeds: Waiting until at least 12 months is often recommended to allow for proper growth and joint development. This is especially important for breeds prone to orthopaedic issues.

Cats:

  • Even before they reach sexual maturity, kittens can be safely spayed or neutered as young as 4 to 6 months.

Even if your pet is already an adult, it’s never too late to think about the procedure. Our team will conduct a comprehensive health check and may recommend blood tests before surgery to ensure your pet is a suitable candidate.

The Neutering & Spaying Process at Vienna Vet

  • Consultation and Pre-Surgical Assessment: We start with a full health check and talk about the surgery, when it will take place, and any other concerns you may have. Additional diagnostic tests may be suggested for older pets or those with health issues.

  • Safe, Modern Anaesthesia: To make sure your pet is safe and comfortable during surgery, our clinic uses the most up-to-date anaesthesia protocols and monitoring equipment.

  • Expert Surgical Care: Our skilled veterinary surgeons use sterile methods and modern pain management to make the procedure as comfortable and safe as possible.

  • Post Surgery Care and Recovery: Most pets heal quickly and are back to their normal activities within a few days. We provide detailed aftercare instructions, offer assistance with pain management, and are always available to address any questions or concerns you may have.

  • Ongoing Support: Our team is here to help you before, during, and after the procedure. We’ll show you how to care for their wounds, which activities to avoid, and what signs to look out for while they heal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take?2025-07-18T01:39:47+04:00

Most pets recover within 7 to 10 days. We give instructions on how to care for yourself after surgery and how to relieve pain. Your pet may need to wear a protective collar (cone) to keep them from licking the incision, and they shouldn’t be allowed to do anything until they are fully healed.

Will my pet gain weight after being neutered or spayed?2025-07-18T01:41:15+04:00

Some pets may have a slightly slower metabolism, but a balanced diet and regular exercise can keep them from gaining weight. We can help you keep your pet healthy by providing advice on what to feed them and how much exercise they require.

Why should I spay or neuter my dog or cat, and what are the long-term benefits?2025-12-15T07:02:15+04:00

Spaying or neutering helps control the pet population while improving your pet’s health and behaviour. Spayed females have a much lower risk of uterine infections and mammary cancer, while neutered males are less prone to prostate problems and testicular cancer. In the long term, the procedure can reduce marking, roaming, and aggressive behaviour, helping your pet live a calmer, healthier life.

What is the ideal age to spay or neuter puppies, kittens, and adult pets?2025-12-15T07:02:39+04:00

Most veterinarians recommend spaying or neutering puppies and kittens between 4 to 6 months of age, before they reach sexual maturity. However, adult pets can also safely undergo the procedure after a full health evaluation. Vienna Vet’s team will advise the best timing based on your pet’s breed, size, and overall health.

Is spaying or neutering safe, and how do you manage anaesthesia risks?2025-12-15T07:03:01+04:00

Yes, spaying and neutering are routine surgical procedures performed under strict veterinary supervision. At Vienna Vet, every pet undergoes a pre-anaesthetic exam and blood tests to assess organ function before surgery. Our veterinarians use modern anaesthetic protocols, continuous monitoring, and pain management to ensure maximum safety and comfort.

What happens during the procedure, and how long does it take?2025-12-15T07:03:24+04:00

The surgery involves removing the reproductive organs under general anaesthesia. This would be the ovaries and uterus in females (spay) and the testicles in males (neuter). The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your pet’s size and condition. Pets are closely monitored during recovery and can usually go home the same day.

How should I care for my pet before and after spaying or neutering?2025-12-15T07:03:45+04:00

Before surgery, your vet may ask you to withhold food for several hours and ensure your pet is clean and calm. After surgery, keep your pet indoors, limit activity for about 10 to 14 days, and prevent licking of the incision site. Vienna Vet provides detailed post-op instructions, pain relief, and follow-up care to ensure smooth healing.

What behavioural changes should I expect after neutering or spaying my pet?2025-12-15T07:04:06+04:00

After neutering or spaying, many pets become calmer and less likely to roam, mark territory, or show aggression. Female pets will no longer go into heat, and males often show reduced mounting behaviour. These changes usually appear gradually within a few weeks as hormone levels stabilize.

Are there health risks associated with delaying or skipping the procedure?2025-12-15T07:04:27+04:00

Delaying spaying or neutering can increase the risk of reproductive diseases such as pyometra, mammary cancer, and testicular tumours. Unneutered pets are also more prone to wandering and accidents. Your vet can help you decide the safest and most appropriate timing based on your pet’s health and lifestyle.

Do you offer feline-friendly spaying and neutering services for cats?2025-12-15T07:04:48+04:00

Yes. Vienna Vet offers cat-specific spaying and neutering services in a calm, feline-friendly environment. Our team uses gentle handling techniques, quiet recovery areas, and tailored anaesthetic plans to minimize stress for cats during and after the procedure.

How much does spaying or neutering cost in Dubai?2025-12-15T07:05:12+04:00

The cost of spaying or neutering in Dubai depends on your pet’s species, size, and health condition. At Vienna Vet, prices are transparent and include anaesthesia, surgery, pain management, and post-operative care. Contact our clinic for a personalized quote or to book a consultation.

At what age do female dogs go into heat?2025-12-15T07:05:34+04:00

Most female dogs experience their first heat cycle between 6 to 12 months of age, depending on their breed and size. Smaller breeds may start earlier, while larger breeds may take longer. Spaying your dog before her first heat can help prevent certain cancers and health complications later in life.
