Why Get Yearly Vaccinations?

Why vaccinate your pet?

Pet vaccination in Vienna Veterinary clinic.

Vaccinating your pet has long been considered one of the easiest ways to give them a better chance at a long, healthy life. Vaccinating your pet prepares the body’s immune system to fight against infectious disease.

How does it work?

When a vaccine is introduced into the body, it stimulates the immune system to recognize a disease causing organism, which in turn stimulates the production of antibodies, used to fight the disease. So if your pet is ever exposed to an infectious disease, its immune system is already prepared to recognize it and fight it off, or reduce the severity of the symptoms, preventing or reducing the spread of disease from animal to animal or animal to human, and giving you peace of mind.

What core vaccinations are required for your pet?

Core vaccinations are considered to be vital for the protection of your pet against the following diseases:

In the Dog – Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis (DHPPiL) and Rabies.

In the Cat - Panluekopenia, Herpesvirus, Calicivirus (PHC) and Rabies.

Non-core vaccinations include, Bordetella bronchisepta – Kennel Cough (KC) in dogs and Feline Leukemia Virus (Felv) in cats.

Your Veterinarian can determine what vaccinations are best for your pet.

When is the best time to have your pet vaccinated?

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) amended their guidelines in recent years, as it was discovered, that the maternal antibodies transmitted to puppies and kittens via their mothers milk, could actually interfere with the efficacy of the vaccines. These antibodies have been shown to drastically decrease by around 16 weeks of age, and with that mind the WSAVA recommend that puppies and kittens should receive a series of 3 injections, starting between 6 and 8 weeks of age, administered in 3-4 week intervals to ensure optimum protection against disease.

Vienna Veterinary clinic is proud to adopt these guidelines! Our recommendation for a primary vaccination course is: 1st injection at 8 weeks, 2nd injection at 12 weeks, and 3rd injection at 16 weeks, or alternatively 1st injection at 6 weeks, 2nd injection at 10 weeks, and 3rd injection at 14 weeks.

Protecting your pet from diseases such as Canine Distemper, Rabies, Feline Leukemia and more is not only necessary but crucial for their health. Yearly vaccinations train your pet's immune system so when the time comes they can fight off deadly diseases that come their way.

Vienna Vets offers all of the vital inoculations that your pets need plus a free of charge health check every 6 months to ensure your pet is in tip top health and to put at ease any concerns you may have about their health.
